SPEAKER FOR OCTOBER

Our October speaker, Kirk Klingensmith is an avid tributary fisherman – fishing the NY Great Lakes and Finger Lakes tributaries for steelhead, brown trout, landlocks and salmon. Kirk’s talk will expand from material he wrote for Karl Weixlmann’s upcoming book Fly Fishing Guide to Steelhead Alley (Releases Nov 19, 2024).  You will not want to miss this great presentation.  I hope to see you there.

“Stealthy Tributary Fishing Strategies” by Kirk Klingensmith

Thursday October 17, 2024; 7:00 (Bring items to sell/swap starting at 6:30)

Fly fishing in our region includes world-class fishing opportunities for salmon, browns and steelhead in the tributaries of the Great Lakes and Finger Lakes.

This presentation will first summarize tactics for swinging streamers and fishing eggs/nymphs, and how fly fishers can adapt to water conditions, size of the river, and fishing pressure.

As conditions become challenging –– fly fishers benefit by switching to more stealthy tactics. These approaches pay dividends in our region, where fly fishers commonly face challenges of high fishing pressure; clear, low or cold water; or in smaller streams.

For the last eight years or so, Kirk has found success using unique adaptations of contact (Euro) nymphing first developed by fly fishing innovator, Joe Goodspeed. Kirk will also share how to incorporate concepts and setups when nymphing with indicators. A number of fly fishers enjoy swinging streamers – which, at certain times, can be the most effective approach. Kirk’s talk will have suggestions for swinging streamers in stealthy situations.

Even if you are not a tributary fly fisher, I believe you will find the concepts in the talk will be helpful to improve your success with trout, smallmouth, and other species.

Kirk served as Twin Tiers Five Rivers FFI chapter president from 2008-2024. He is a life member of TU and FFI. Kirk has been fly fishing for 55 years – and enjoys fly fishing for many species.
